Learning Beyond the Classroom: Adventures, Reflection, and Discovery
Science Week was a fantastic success in our school this year, marked by engaging activities, interactive learning, and plenty of excitement. We were delighted to welcome Emma and Tiernan from W5, who delivered an inspiring and energetic science show for all our 1st to 4th year students. Their demonstrations transformed Amharclann into a lively space of curiosity and exploration, with students eagerly participating in experiments that ranged from defying gravity to exploring the surprising world of probability.
The show challenged students to think differently about the science behind everyday phenomena. What began as simple lessons in chance and physical principles quickly became thrilling demonstrations that captured everyone’s attention. Emma and Tiernan’s enthusiasm and clear passion for science encouraged students to look beyond the textbook and to appreciate science as a dynamic and creative process. Their visit left a lasting impression, sparking conversations and new interests long after the show ended.
In addition to the W5 workshops, students also took part in a Chemistry Escape Room later in the week. This activity encouraged teamwork, logical thinking and problem-solving as students collaborated to crack codes, complete chemical challenges and unlock the final clues before time ran out. The labs were filled with energy as groups worked together to apply their knowledge in a fun and fast-paced environment. It proved to be a wonderful example of how learning through challenge and cooperation can bring science to life.
Well done to all students who took part in the various activities throughout Science Week. A special word of thanks to Emma and Tiernan from W5 for inspiring our students and helping to deepen their appreciation for the world of science.

2nd & 5th Year Retreats
Our 2nd and 5th Year students recently participated in their annual retreats, once again led by the ever-inspiring Mr. Gerry Keegan. This year’s themes, “You Are Special” and “You Are Loved by God”, encouraged students to pause, reflect, and engage more deeply with their spiritual and personal development.
In addition to the always-popular music quizzes and team-building activities, Gerry’s workshops provided a meaningful space for students to explore their own values, strengths, and life experiences. He shared new insights from his own faith journey, prompting thoughtful discussion and reflection among the group. Of course, no retreat with Gerry would be complete without his wonderful musical performances, which students enjoyed throughout the week.
Gerry has been facilitating retreats in Loreto Balbriggan since 1993, and his warm presence and unique approach continue to make these days a highlight of the school year. We look forward to welcoming him back once again in November 2026.

6th Year New York Trip
Our 6th year students recently embarked on an unforgettable trip to New York City which was an experience packed with discovery, excitement, and lifelong memories. From world-famous landmarks to the buzzing atmosphere of its diverse neighbourhoods, students had the chance to truly immerse themselves in the energy of “the city that never sleeps.” Throughout the trip, students and staff enjoyed a full and carefully planned itinerary. Highlights included a guided tour of the city led by our outstanding tour guide, Luke, whose knowledge and enthusiasm brought New York’s history and culture vividly to life. Students explored iconic locations such as Times Square, Central Park, and the Financial District, gaining insight into the city’s architecture, heritage, and global significance.
A visit to the Statue of Liberty was a standout moment for many—a chance to see one of the world’s most recognisable symbols of freedom up close. The group also enjoyed the magic of Broadway with a performance of Mamma Mia, a vibrant and uplifting show that had everyone singing along. Another unforgettable experience was the nighttime cruise, where students witnessed the breathtaking Manhattan skyline illuminated against the night sky.
Beyond sightseeing, the trip offered students the chance to learn outside the classroom, strengthen friendships, and step into the wider world with curiosity and confidence. Experiencing New York’s culture, pace, and diversity provided a valuable educational and personal development opportunity and one that will stay with them for years to come.
A huge thank you to the staff who accompanied the group and to everyone involved in organising such a successful trip. It truly was a remarkable adventure!
