World Book Day & Earth Day Celebration in Loreto Balbriggan
Earth Day is celebrated across the world on April 22nd 2025 this year but here at Loreto Balbriggan we celebrated our own Earth Day on March 7th. We developed and created our own workshops, orchestrated by the TY Sustainability classes (4A + 4B). They then delivered the workshops to their own peers in TY and 1st year. The workshops covered a variety of sustainability topics.
SDGs: In this workshop students were introduced to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. They learned in detail about what each goal means and the benefit of each goal through playing games and quizzes.
Deforestation: The students got to learn and watch videos about the effects of deforestation, how it impacts us and wildlife and what we can do to help.
Composting: For composting the students got to visit and interact with the wormery in the school. Then they got to make their own little wormery with oreos and jellies to find out how composting works.
Sea Turtle Conservation: The turtle conservation workshop was a fun way for the students to learn about sea turtles and the threats they face through a presentation and quiz, along with creating their own little turtles out of paper cups and other recycled art supplies.
Endangered Animals: The endangered animals workshop was about learning about animals, who are endangered, why they are in danger and how they can help through a presentation, quiz and word search.
Sustainable Cities: During this workshop students built their own sustainable cities using an interactive board game and code created by the TY sustainability students inspired by SDG12. Learning where best to place facilities and housing when creating a sustainable city.
Waste Management: For this workshop the students learned about recycling and how to recycle through playing bingo. They also did recycled theme colouring learning good practice for waste management at home and in school.
During lunchtime there was great excitement at the swap shops. Students could bring in old books and clothes to swap for new items. In the afternoon, TY students gathered together for a film and whole year group quiz to test their knowledge of the topics covered in the workshops. A great day was had by all!
World Book Day
On March 6th, the library was abuzz with excitement as we concluded our annual Book Review Competition in celebration of World Book Day 2025. The event saw a fantastic number of entries, showcasing the enthusiasm and literary passion of our students. Pictured are some of the talented winners alongside Ms. McDonough, who presented the awards. Each student was commended for their outstanding book reviews, which demonstrated remarkable insight, thoughtful analysis, and exceptional language skills. Their ability to engage with literature and articulate their perspectives so eloquently made the judging process both challenging and inspiring.
A huge congratulations to all participants for their dedication and creativity. World Book Day is a reminder of the power of reading, and this competition truly highlighted the literary talent within our school community. We look forward to celebrating again next year.
