Intercultural Week 2026

The week of the 23rd to the 27th of March marked the celebration of Intercultural Week in the school, a vibrant and engaging programme of activities enjoyed by all.

The Polish workshop on Monday was a highlight of the week. Marge introduced 1st Year students to elements of Polish history, food, and culture. The majority of the session was devoted to learning traditional Polish dances, with students enthusiastically taking part. There was a wonderful sense of energy in the room as students immersed themselves fully in the music and movement.

Thursday featured the ever-popular Intercultural Food Fayre. A wide variety of dishes from around the world were available for students to sample, many of which were prepared and brought in by the students themselves. From German strudels to mikatés from the Republic of Congo and Romanian cabbage rolls, the selection was both diverse and delicious. The food proved so popular that it was enjoyed in record time, a clear testament to its success!

The week concluded on a high with the Intercultural Dance and Fashion Show. The dedication and organisation of Intercultural Captain, Eiman Iftikar, were evident throughout a seamless and highly professional event. Approximately 100 students represented countries spanning Ireland, Africa, Asia and beyond. The fashion show was a colourful celebration of cultural identity, while the dances—performed to an exceptionally high standard—reflected weeks of preparation. Carefully curated music ensured the show ran to a precise 40 minutes, with both Junior and Senior students attending separate performances.

What stood out most was the deep sense of respect, support, and kindness that is intrinsic to our school community in Loreto Balbriggan. Students encouraged one another wholeheartedly, creating an atmosphere that was both uplifting and inspiring. It was truly a special and memorable experience for all involved.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Staff Intercultural Team, led by Ms Caffrey, whose dedication and careful organisation were central to the success of the week.We would also like to thank the members of the Balbriggan and District Historical Society, who attended one of the performances. They praised the high standard of the event and, in particular, the spirit of encouragement and mutual respect shown by the students.

Throughout the week, pop-up concerts took place during break and lunchtime, showcasing an array of talent including singers, dancers, and even a bagpipes player. Each performance was met with enthusiastic support from peers, who gathered eagerly to enjoy the daily entertainment.

Each morning, students braved all weather conditions to take part in the Intercultural World Cup on the astro-turf at 8.30am. The competition culminated in a final between Scotland and Ireland, with Scotland emerging victorious for the second consecutive year. Once again, the level of support from fellow students greatly enhanced the occasion.

Intercultural Week was a tremendous success, made possible by the hard work, enthusiasm, and dedication of our students , who continue to be the driving force behind this annual celebration. Well done to all involved.
