Remembering Rafaella
Today, we come together in remembrance of Rafaella Costin, whose kindness and vibrant spirit continue to be felt throughout Loreto Balbriggan. Rafaella, who would be in 6th Year with us today, passed away on December 5th, 2021, at just 14 years of age. Although she was only in 2nd Year at the time, her contribution to school life was truly remarkable. She was an excellent student, hard-working, enthusiastic and engaged. Rafaella shared her talents generously; she represented the school on the U15 soccer team, where she played in midfield. A true team player, her enthusiasm was infectious and her commitment to her teammates admirable. Beyond the sports field, she was an eager and energetic member of our school’s newspaper committee, Lorbal News, where her creativity and positivity shone through.
Rafaella was kind and gentle, and her warmth made an impact on everyone she met. Her love for swimming and water polo reflected her adventurous spirit and her joy for life. Tragically, while doing what she loved most—playing water polo—Rafaella became suddenly ill. Despite the best efforts of the team at Temple Street Children’s Hospital, an undetectable heart abnormality led to her unexpected passing, leaving her family, friends, teachers, and our entire community heartbroken by this unimaginable loss.
In her memory, and in recognition of the joy she found in the water, we are honoured to once again support the second annual Rafaella Costin Memorial Swimathon, which will take place on Sunday, 28th December 2025, in Aura Leisure Centre, Drogheda. Students and staff will be taking part in the Swimathon, and we invite your sponsorship and donations in support of this significant event. All funds raised will be shared equally between Loreto Balbriggan, Drogheda Water Polo Club, and Drogheda Swim Club, communities that were meaningful parts of Rafaella’s life.
